The Learning Specialist works in collaboration with the Office of Student Success, Principal, Student Support Consultant, and teachers to meet the needs of our diverse learners at both the elementary and middle school levels. S/he provides individualized and small group instruction to students in need of math and reading support. With the support ofthe Student Support Consultant, the Learning Specialist will create and implement student support plans based on multiple data sources and teacher input. S/he participates in student support meetings and provides evidence based data in the form of progress monitoring as an on-going practice.
Duties:
Implement research-based interventions for reading and math that align with the Common Core Standards and student support plans
Create and implement the the goals and objectives as outlined in the student support plan
Monitor progress of student(s) and update the student support plan on a regular basis
Communicate with families about student progress and provide quarterly progress reports related to student goals
Create and maintain student portfolios or folders that contain work samples and data pertaining to student support plan goal(s)
Adjust instruction as needed based on multiple data points, observations and teacher input
Accountable for students’ reading and math growth and increasing the students’ level of achievement in both areas
Maintain frequent communication with school administrators regarding data on student literacy and math growth (through student support team meetings)
Assist in the analysis of school-wide literacy and math strengths and weaknesses and formulate plans to improve overall student achievement (through Datawise Mondays)
Serve as a resource to content area teachers in identifying reading and math needs, adapting instructional techniques
In collaboration with the classroom teacher, provide assistance as requested, such as participation in parent conferences, serve as a resource to promote parental support at home in the areas of reading and math
Coordinate with other school departments to support a literacy rich school environment, including the volunteer librarian, student tutors and support teacher

Ability to use a variety of effective instructional strategies to increase student literacy and math growth
Experience in assessing student skills and knowledge in reading and math, using a variety of formal and informal assessment tools
Ability to serve as a school-wide resource for reading and math support
Deep understanding of evidence-based reading and math research and practices
Interpersonal skills (communication, problem solving, conflict management, collaboration) to share research based instructional approaches with teachers and administrators
Strong organizational skills
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
Education Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree or relevant work experience required in the applicable field of Special Education, General Education, or related field.
