Capitol Hill Day School seeks a full-time Middle School Science teacher for the 2023-2024 academic year.
At Capitol Hill Day School, learning is challenging, engaging, playful, and relevant to the real world. Students learn across subjects with an experiential curriculum that integrates not only academic subjects, but the arts, physical education, service learning, and technology. Through an extensive field education program, students take part in experiences beyond the classroom related to topics of study. Teachers collaborate with each other in developing, planning, and implementing curriculum; school-wide, they create a spirit of camaraderie through their interactions with students, parents, and other members of the staff. Also essential to the School’s program is its commitment to diversity, ensuring that students from varying backgrounds, cultures, and learning styles learn from and with each other. Emphasis is placed on building a classroom community that respects each individual while teaching children how to become caring, engaged members of the group.

The middle school science program is designed so students develop a deep conceptual understanding of key ideas in chemistry, physics, biology, and Earth and environmental science. Curriculum and pedagogy teach students to explore and explain the world around them using science and engineering practices and core disciplinary ideas. The OpenSciEd curriculum is the foundation of many units. The Science teacher collaborates with other middle school educators to create integrated, project-based learning opportunities. In addition to classroom teaching, the position encompasses responsibilities including but not limited to, homeroom teaching and student advising.
For the 2023-2024 school year, Capitol Hill Day School anticipates an opening for a 7th and 8th Grade Science teacher. The 7th Grade course investigates Earth and environmental science topics The 8th Grade course investigates physics and chemistry topics.
Requirements
Master’s degree and/or extensive experience teaching science at the middle school level; understanding of child development and experience working with a range of needs and abilities.
