Position Type: This is a full-time, exempt position, which includes teaching one section of Computer Science and also serving as an in-house substitute for the equivalent of 3 additional courses to meet the requirements for a full-time position.
Subject Matter: The School is specifically looking for a teacher who can teach one section of Computer Science to Upper School students and develop a broader Computer Science program. The teacher will also serve as an in-house substitute teacher.
Position Term and Equivalency: Faculty employment agreements are from July 1-June 30. On-campus work has anticipated beginning and ending dates. Curriculum design and program development are ongoing throughout the year.
Position Description: The Field School's program is ambitious and bold, and our teachers are required to embody the mission of the school – self-discovery, skills of mind, generosity of heart – in their day-to-day interactions with students, in the design and implementation of curriculum, and in their professional interaction with colleagues.
A flexible and innovative mindset is required. As content experts and students of best practice, Field teachers are expected to adapt to their students' learning interests and needs. Strong communication skills and a willingness to collaborate are also important, as Field teachers regularly work with other teachers, student-support teams, department chairs, and academic leadership to ensure that all of our students are being supported and challenged by our mission. Teachers are expected to teach assigned courses, serve as student advisors, and facilitate school-wide programming.
To serve all students as outlined above, teachers must be actively anti-racist in their approach to their curriculum and their interpersonal interactions with all community members.
At the core, all teachers are expected to be committed learners. While Field is an independent school, we are not independent of each other or our established academic standards. Faculty are members of the larger Field community and expected to shepherd the values of the school.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach one section of Computer Science, which meets 2-3 times per week (four times per 7-day schedule cycle) for 70 minutes per class period.
- Design and execute lessons, units, and assessments determined by your department chair that are skill-based, culturally responsive, and developmentally appropriate.
- Provide meaningful and timely feedback to students about their performance. Keep accurate records of student performance and attendance.
- Write narrative reports about each student’s skill development in the course.
- Maintain a classroom environment that addresses implicit and explicit bias, and that is inclusive of all students.
- Serve as a student advisor.
- Attend and engage in department, grade level, staff, and other meetings.
- Engage in professional development as determined by your supervisor.
- Attend events outside of regular school hours as determined by your direct supervisor, whether virtual or on campus.
- Represent the school through admissions-related activities as requested.
- Other duties as assigned by the Division Directors.
Qualifications and Competencies:
Teachers should:
- Have a degree in their content area from an accredited college or university. Master’s and other advanced degrees are encouraged.
- Have content expertise, a strong knowledge of subject area skills, and an informed developmental understanding of the age group.
- Have an ability to develop strong, trusting relationships with students and families.
- Have an ability to create an anti-racist and culturally-responsive classroom.
- Have strong communication skills.
- Have an ability and commitment to continuously grow and learn as a teacher.
- Have an ability to work creatively and flexibly in the classroom.
Work Environment: Teachers will perform their work duties on campus in the coming school year. The Field School mandates vaccination for all faculty and staff. The school may, in its discretion, grant an exemption to the mandatory vaccination policy for medical reasons submitted by a physician.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is active; it requires standing and walking, including stairs.
Travel: Regular travel is not expected in this position.
