The Learning and Literacy Specialist will promote the mission and philosophy of The Harbor School, while meeting the following duties and responsibilities:

• Collaborate with teachers to develop and implement learning support plans for students who are in need of additional support
• Monitor progress of students via regular meetings with teachers, as well as assessment data
• Review and summarize educational evaluations, and recommend psycho-educational or neuro-psych assessments when beneficial
• Oversee learning support tools and assistive technology
• Support teachers in planning and implementation of differentiated instruction
• Coordinate schedule of push-in and pull-out support with specialists in speech and language and occupational therapy
• Build and/or maintain network of local support resources
• Participate in and/or facilitate parent and teacher conversations regarding student support
• Provide faculty professional development in approaches to learning differences
• Provide education to parents regarding learning differences
• Work with small groups of students in specific skill areas such as executive functioning, reading, fine motor, or social skills
• Oversee and build library collection to support curriculum and diversity goals, and maintain leveled books for differentiated reading instruction

Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in special education
• At least three years experience differentiating instruction an early childhood/ early elementary setting
• Background in reading instruction methods, such as Orton Gillingham, preferred
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to collaborate with teachers
• Caring and nurturing attitude toward children
